Things worth knowing before you pay

• Good to know: This e-Visa is open only if you already hold a Western visa or residence permit

  Turkey's online visa for an Indian passport is conditional. When you apply you must hold a valid visa or residence permit issued by the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland or a Schengen country. That document can be used or unused, so long as it is still valid on the day you land in Turkey. Without one, your route is a sticker visa through the consulate, which is a separate application on a slower timetable.

• Good to know: One entry, 30 days of stay, and 180 days in which to arrive

  The e-Visa admits you once, for a stay of up to 30 days. Its validity runs for 180 days from the arrival date you enter on the form, and you may enter on any day inside that window. Leave Turkey and the visa is spent; let the window lapse unused and you apply again from scratch. Put the arrival date on the form carefully, because it fixes when the clock starts.

• Good to know: A return ticket, a hotel booking and USD 50 a day are conditions of this e-Visa

  The supporting visa is not the only condition. Turkey also expects you to hold a return ticket, a hotel reservation and at least USD 50 for each day of your stay, and the application form itself asks for a flight or other transport reservation. A refundable fare is the safer way to meet the ticket condition before the visa is in hand.

• Important: The fee is charged in US dollars, and a mistake on the form is not refunded

  Turkey prices its e-Visa in US dollars, not rupees, and takes payment by Mastercard or Visa when you submit. The card must be enabled for international, 3D Secure transactions, and cards from Turkish banks are not accepted. Once issued, nothing on the e-Visa can be corrected: if a detail does not match your passport the visa is invalid and the fee is not returned, and neither is the fee on an unfinished payment. Check every field against the passport before you pay.

• Good to know: The visa is issued only at evisa.gov.tr, and you can apply there yourself

  The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs runs the e-Visa portal. It takes the application and the payment directly, needs no agent and no sponsor, and is the only place this visa is issued. Whoever prepares the form, the decision, the government fee and the document itself come from the ministry.

• Important: The online form asks for three things, not a document file

  To apply for the e-Visa you need a passport valid for at least six months from your travel date, a flight or other transport reservation, and a Mastercard or Visa card. The longer checklist quoted for a Turkey visa, six months of bank statements, three years of tax returns, a no-objection certificate and a cover letter, is not something the e-Visa form collects. Keep those papers for a consular application; do not pay anyone to prepare them for an online one.
