Things worth knowing before you pay

• Important: Your stay is set at the border, not at approval

  The figure to plan around is 30 days, although the ordinary single-entry visa can allow up to 90. The number you actually get is written into your passport by the immigration officer when you arrive, so it is decided at the airport rather than when the visa is approved. Keep the hotel voucher and tickets from your application handy; they show the dates you asked for.

• Important: One entry: leaving for Kenya ends it, Zanzibar does not

  The visa admits you once. Cross into Kenya for a Masai Mara leg, or fly out anywhere, and it is used up; returning to Tanzania means applying and paying again. Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, so the ferry from Dar es Salaam or a domestic flight does not count as an exit. The islands do run a separate mandatory travel-insurance scheme for foreign visitors, so budget for that if they are on the plan.

• Important: Book before you apply: tickets and a hotel go in with the form

  This application is lodged with flight tickets and a confirmed hotel voucher attached, and the online form itself asks for a return ticket. So the usual sequence, approval first and bookings second, is reversed here. Choose fares and rooms you can amend, and make sure their dates line up with the entry and exit dates you type into the form.

• Good to know: The government fee is in dollars: USD 50, paid when you apply

  Tanzania prices the ordinary single-entry visa at USD 50 and collects it by card on the online application, so budget for it in dollars. If the application is refused, the fee is not returned by Tanzania.

• Good to know: Six months on the passport, counted from your arrival date

  The six-month rule runs from the day you land in Tanzania, not the day you apply, so check the expiry against your arrival date. Two clean visa pages are needed, and the personal-details pages must be free of hand-written corrections or alterations; a passport that has been amended by hand should be replaced before you apply.

• Important: Decided in Tanzania, with no counter to visit

  The Immigration Services Department in Tanzania examines and issues this visa through its online portal; the High Commission in New Delhi is not part of the process. There is no appointment and nothing to give before you travel: fingerprints and a photo are taken at the Tanzanian port of entry. Allow five to seven working days from a complete upload; that is typical, not fixed.
