Things worth knowing before you pay

• Important: The visa fee is the starting point, not the total

  Saudi Arabia prices its tourist visa at SAR 300, roughly USD 80, and the rupee figure moves with the exchange rate. Trip insurance, a digital processing charge and VAT are collected alongside that headline, so the amount that leaves your account is higher than the visa line alone.

• Good to know: Two routes in, and your passport history decides which

  Indian passports are not on the list for Saudi Arabia's online tourist visa. The online route opens to you if you hold a US, UK or Schengen visa that you have already travelled on, and residence in a Gulf state, the US, the UK or the EU can also qualify you. Without one of those, your application goes to the Saudi embassy or consulate, and that is the route described here.

• Important: Book the flight and the hotel before you apply

  Saudi Arabia wants a return ticket, proof of where you will stay and a day-by-day plan of the trip in the file. If you are used to applying on a refundable reservation, switch habits here: the bookings need to exist when the application is lodged.

• Good to know: Fast on paper, but the consulate can ask for more

  Tourist applications typically come back within one to three working days, and that figure is an average rather than a guarantee. The Saudi authorities can call an applicant in for an interview when the papers leave a question open, and a mismatch between the form and the documents can lead to refusal, so fix travel dates once the visa is in hand.

• Good to know: Ninety days per visit, whichever visa you get

  Saudi Arabia's tourist visa allows a stay of up to 90 days at a time. The version issued through the missions comes as either a single-entry visa valid for three months or a multiple-entry visa valid for a year, while the online visa is always the one-year, multiple-entry kind. Check the expiry date on the visa you are issued and plan the exit before it.
