Things worth knowing before you pay

• Good to know: Ten days or thirty: the choice is made on the form

  Two tourist visas are open to Indian passports, both good for a single entry, and you pick between them when you apply rather than at the airport. The shorter covers a stay of up to ten days at a government fee of OMR 5; the longer allows thirty days at OMR 20 and carries extra eligibility conditions for Indian nationals, so confirm you qualify on the Royal Oman Police portal before choosing it.

• Important: The fee is paid up front and is not returned

  The Royal Oman Police takes its fee at the moment you submit, and its own portal warns that the fee is non-refundable and that paying does not guarantee a visa will be issued. Get the passport scans and the dates right before you reach the payment step, because a refusal costs exactly what an approval does.

• Important: Book the hotel and the return flight before you apply

  This is a corridor where the bookings come before the paperwork. The application asks for your entry and exit dates, and Oman's authorities list a confirmed hotel reservation, a return ticket and health insurance among what an Indian tourist must hold. Have all three settled before you open the form, and keep them on your phone for the border.

• Good to know: One entry only: a UAE detour spends the visa

  Both the ten-day and the thirty-day visa admit you exactly once. Cross the land border into the UAE and the Oman visa is used up; coming back to Muscat for your flight home means a second application and a second fee. Keep the Oman stay in one block, and remember that the UAE leg needs its own visa arrangements on an Indian passport.

• Good to know: Passport scans and a 35 by 45 mm photo, each under 512 KB

  Send colour scans of the passport's front and last pages; the passport must have six months left, counted from the day you land in Oman rather than the day you apply. The photo is 35 mm wide by 45 mm high on a white background, which is the Schengen format rather than the square 51 mm print an Indian passport application uses. The police portal caps every attachment at 512 KB and takes JPEG, PNG or TIFF for the photo, so compress the scans before you send them.

• Important: Holding a valid US, UK or Schengen visa? You may not need this one

  Oman lets Indian passport holders in without a visa for up to 14 days if they are residents of, or hold a valid entry visa for, the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, Japan or a Schengen country, provided they carry a return ticket, a confirmed hotel booking, health insurance and enough money for the stay. Those 14 days cannot be extended or turned into any residence visa. If you qualify, read the rule on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs site before paying for an e-visa.
