Things worth knowing before you pay

• Good to know: Sixty days to enter, thirty days to stay

  Once issued, a Lao eVisa gives you 60 days in which to arrive. The 30-day stay starts on the day you enter, not on the day the visa is granted. Time the application so that up to 5 to 7 business days of processing fits before departure, but not so early that the 60-day entry window closes before your flight.

• Good to know: One entry only, so plan any side trips carefully

  The eVisa lets you into Laos once. Leave for Thailand, Vietnam or Cambodia and coming back means a new visa: another eVisa, or the visa on arrival that Indian passport holders qualify for. If you want several entries or a longer stay, that permission comes from a Lao embassy or consulate rather than the online route.

• Good to know: The government fee is fixed in US dollars

  The Lao eVisa application fee is USD 51.75. Because it is set in dollars, the rupee equivalent is a conversion that moves with the exchange rate, so treat any rupee figure for it as approximate until the day you pay. This amount is the government's charge alone and is separate from any service fee.

• Good to know: The photo is a 4 × 6 cm scan, taller than it is wide

  The eVisa asks for a scanned colour photograph in 4 by 6 cm proportions, which is a 2:3 portrait ratio. Keep the background plain white, show the full face clearly, and leave off headgear and glasses. Check the file's proportions before you upload it; a square or near-square crop is a different shape.

• Important: Two ways in: eVisa before you fly, or visa on arrival

  Indian passport holders can also obtain a Lao visa on arrival, handing over the paperwork at the airport when they land. The eVisa moves that step to before departure: apply online, pay, and the approval letter is sent to the email address on the application. Keep a copy with your passport for the journey.

• Good to know: Six months on the passport, and a clean scan of the bio page

  Your passport needs more than six months of validity left for a Lao tourist visa. For the eVisa, the core upload is a scan of the passport's bio page alongside the photograph; further documents can be requested, so keep flight, hotel and funds evidence to hand even if the form does not ask for them up front.
