Things worth knowing before you pay

• Good to know: You could buy this at the airport instead

  Indian passport holders are on Indonesia's visa-on-arrival list. The 30-day electronic visa is the pre-paid form of the counter visa at Jakarta, Bali and the other approved entry points, at the same IDR 500,000. Filing ahead settles the fee and your details before you fly; it does not get you a different visa.

  Immigration charges IDR 500,000 for the 30-day visa, roughly ₹2,700, paid in full when the application is lodged and kept by Immigration whatever happens afterwards. It is the only government charge inside the visa itself; anything above it in a quoted price is handling.

• Important: Book the return flight before you file

  A confirmed round-trip ticket is on the document list for this visa, and Immigration expects a return or onward ticket from anyone entering on it. Book the flights first, and keep the return date within the 30-day stay so the booking matches the visa you are applying for.

• Important: One entry: leave Indonesia and the visa is spent

  The visa covers one entry. A side trip to Singapore or Kuala Lumpur ends it, whatever days were left, and coming back means paying for a fresh one. Moving between Indonesian islands — Bali to Lombok, Java to Sumatra — is domestic travel and does not touch the visa.

• Good to know: Thirty days can become sixty, once, from inside Indonesia

  The visa on arrival can be extended a single time, for a further 30 days, and the request is made from inside Indonesia — online through Immigration's e-visa portal or at an immigration office — before the first 30 days run out. It costs a second IDR 500,000. There is no second extension, and it cannot be filed before you land.

• Good to know: Six months left on the passport, counted from arrival

  Indonesia wants a passport with at least six months of validity remaining on the day you land, and two blank pages for the stamps. The electronic visa is issued against your passport number, so if yours expires sooner, renew it first rather than apply and then reapply on the new one.
