Things worth knowing before you pay
The constraints that actually get applications refused, with where each one comes from.
Good to know: Ten years on paper, six months per visit
A Canadian visitor visa is a counterfoil placed in your passport, issued as single or multiple entry at the visa officer's discretion, for a term that can run to ten years. It ends sooner if your passport or your biometrics expire first, because the visa cannot outlast either. Each visit is a separate matter: most visitors are admitted for up to six months, and the officer at the port of entry sets the date by which you must leave. Ten years is how long you may keep coming back, not how long you may stay.

Important: No visa on arrival, and no eTA for an Indian passport
An Indian passport holder cannot land in Canada and settle the visa at the airport, and the electronic travel authorisation that visa-exempt nationalities fly in on does not extend to Indian citizens: India is absent from IRCC's list of countries whose visa-required nationals may use an eTA. The application is lodged and decided before you travel.

Important: Fingerprints come after you apply, not before
Canada collects fingerprints and a photograph from Indian applicants, but the sequence differs from Schengen, where the prints are taken at the counter when you hand in the file. Here the application goes in first, with the biometrics fee paid alongside it; IRCC then sends a biometric instruction letter, and only that letter lets you book the collection appointment. Prints stay valid for ten years and attach automatically to a later application, though a new visa cannot run past the date they expire.

Good to know: Ottawa keeps the visa fee whichever way it decides
The government charges CAD 100 per person for the visitor visa and CAD 85 per person for biometrics, both paid to IRCC when the application is submitted; a family applying together pays at most CAD 170 for biometrics. Once IRCC has begun processing, the visa fee is not returned whatever the decision, and the biometrics fee comes back only if your fingerprints were never actually collected.

Good to know: Weeks right now, but the number moves
IRCC publishes its own processing estimate for visitor visas lodged from India and revises it as the queue changes. On 22 September 2026 the figure stood at 32 days; earlier in 2026 it ran close to three months. Treat the current number as a snapshot, check IRCC's tool before fixing dates, and leave the paid flight until the passport is back with the visa in it: the document list asks for a cover letter setting out the trip, not a ticket.
