Things worth knowing before you pay

• Good to know: Ninety days to enter, thirty days to stay

  Your e-visa carries a start date and an end date 90 days apart. You can arrive on any day inside that window, and once in you have up to 30 days, but the whole stay has to finish before the window closes, so arriving late in the window shortens it. For a standard application the start date is set no earlier than three working days after you submit.

• Good to know: One entry only, so plan a Caucasus loop around it

  The e-visa admits you once. Step out of Azerbaijan for any reason, even a day in Tbilisi, and it is used up; getting back in means a fresh application and a fresh fee. If Azerbaijan is one stop on a longer route, order the trip so you cross into it a single time. Should you end up holding more than one e-visa, leave on the one you entered with.

• Good to know: USD 29 paid up front, and the state keeps it

  The portal charges a USD 20 state fee plus a USD 9 processing fee when you submit, USD 29 in total, by Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay or JCB, and the card does not have to be in your own name. The state does not return it whatever it decides: a refused application gets no money back, though you may then apply again through an Azerbaijani embassy or consulate. An urgent e-visa, issued within three hours even on holidays, costs considerably more.

• Good to know: Print it, and travel on the passport you applied with

  There is no visa on arrival for Indian passport holders, and the e-visa is not stuck into your passport either: it is an A4 document you print yourself and hand over with your passport at the border. It is only good with the exact travel document you applied on; apply on one passport and fly on another and the e-visa is void. That passport also needs at least three months of validity left after the e-visa's own end date.

• Good to know: Staying past fifteen days? Get registered

  The registration rule kicks in on day sixteen: a stay longer than 15 days must be logged with the State Migration Service, and the filing deadline is 15 days after you arrive. The hotel or your apartment host is meant to do it, so ask at check-in, since a private host may not know to; you can also file it yourself through the Migration Service online. There is no state fee. Skipping it is an administrative offence, and overstaying the e-visa is treated the same way.

• Important: A visit visa, not a work permit

  This e-visa is for visiting: it lets you enter and travel within the country but gives no right to any paid work, which needs a separate work visa under Azerbaijan's Migration Code. If a job is the purpose of the trip, the e-visa is the wrong product.
